Tasks

Notify when done

Someone leaves before Rendel has finished. Rendel finishes on the server and tells them, by push or as a card in your app.

People do not wait for an answer. They ask, switch apps, lock the phone. Rendel keeps going: the reads and the changes it makes through your API, at once or after a confirmation, finish on the server whether the app is open or not, and the answer is kept in the conversation. When it is done, Rendel tells the person. When it still needs their tap, Rendel tells them that too.

There is nothing to build. It is on for every app, and it reaches people the way your follow-ups do: by push where push is set up, otherwise as a card in your app.

You want these notices to reach people on their lock screen, and to tell them why in your permission prompt.

Prompt

Make sure Rendel (rendel.ai) can tell our users when an answer finishes after they left the app. I am the developer and I am asking for this. In Flutter, check that rendel_push is a dependency at the same tag as rendel and that a tapped push reaches Rendel.handlePush (rendel_push does this). On a website there is nothing to add. Where the app already asks for notification permission, add one line saying we tell them when something they asked for is ready or needs their approval. How it works: https://rendel.ai/docs/tasks/notify-when-done Build the app and tell me what you changed.

Paste into your coding agent, opened in your project. Works in Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Windsurf, GitHub Copilot and Gemini CLI.

What the agent will do

  • Check that push is wired: rendel_push beside rendel, and a tapped push reaching Rendel.
  • Add one line about these notices where your app asks for notification permission.

How to check it worked

In a build with the test key, ask for something that runs one of your actions and go to the home screen at once: the notice arrives within a minute and a half, and a tap opens the answer.

The two notices

NoticeWhen it goesWhat a tap opens
Task finishedThe person had left before the answer was ready, and the turn ran an action or took 15 seconds or more. It goes 20 seconds after the turn ended. The same conversation, with the answer in it.
Waiting for your approvalThe answer ends on a confirmation card that nobody answered: 20 seconds after the turn ended if the person had already left, otherwise 2 minutes after the card was shown. Only while at least 3 of the card's 10 minutes are left. The same conversation, with the card. A card whose time ran out says so.

A notice does not go when the person came back on their own first, opened the conversation, or answered the card. Each answer gets at most one.

What people see

The title is your app's name. The line under it is neutral, in the language the answer was in:

  • Your answer is ready.
  • Something is waiting for your approval.

Nothing about what was asked or done shows on the lock screen, unless you turn on Name the topic on the lock screen under Settings › Channels. Then the line is what Rendel did ("Return started for order 1234.") or what the card asks, as long as it holds no personal detail such as an email address or a phone number. Automations › Task notifications shows both notices in English and Turkish.

The rules they follow

  • A service message, not marketing. Your follow-up switch, daily and weekly limits and quiet hours do not apply. At most 5 go to one person a day.
  • Free. A notice is not a message on your plan and costs nothing.
  • Only to the person, on the phone they used. A notice names the person, never the device, and goes only to the install the conversation was held on, while that install is still theirs. After a sign-out, or with somebody else signed in on the phone, what was waiting is dropped, and a notice that already went no longer opens.
  • What does not finish on the server. An action your app's own code runs on the device (adding to a cart in the app, for example) waits for the app, and so does anything that takes longer than about 2 minutes. Those do not get a "Task finished".

Turn it off

Automations › Task notifications has its own switch, on from the start and apart from the follow-ups' one. Off, nothing goes: not even a notice already waiting.

Where you see them

  • On a conversation's page: "Finished after they left · push 12:04 · opened 12:06".
  • On Users, the filter Had: A task that finished after they left.
  • On a person's page, in the timeline.
  • Under Task notifications on Automations: how many went this week, and to whom.

What to tell your users

A push your users did not expect can surprise them. One line where you ask for notification permission covers it, for example: "We'll let you know when an answer or an order change you asked for is ready, and when something needs your approval." The notices are about something the person asked for, never marketing. A person who turns notifications off in the phone's settings gets the in-app card instead.
